HARVESTING AND POST HARVEST HANDLING OF LIVE CRABS FROM THE POND
I. CATCHING
Bintol is proven to be very effective in catching crabs. So to do this, don't feed the crabs before harvesting.
II. TYING
Crabs should be tied to allow safe handling. Plastic straw is recommended for tying. Abaca and other similar materilas should be avoided because it contributes to mortality.
III. STORAGE
Crabs should be stored in plastic or wooden boxes. The storage area must be free from ants, flies and mosquitoes. Avoid hot and windy places as these cause any thermal shock and lower their shelf life. Crabs in the storage should be sprinkled with seawater every 6-8 hours to prevent drying of the gills. Properly conditioned crabs will last more than one week out of the water.
