It is tolerant to high day temperature, often resulting to premature flowering, stunded leaf growth and bitter tasting leaves. At low elevation in high temperature areas some cultivars do not forms solid heads, they tend to flower precosciously and seed forming the normal number of rosette leaves. Cultivars have been selected which do not readily form flowering stems at high temperature. Elevation about 1,000 meters provides good condition for optimum growth.
